JOHN 8:37-59
Reflection
From these verses, we will be able to see that the enemies of Jesus, the Pharisees and some of the evil Jews were obviously under the influence of Satan.
At first, the Devil and his followers have a murderous hatred for the LORD JESUS CHRIST. When He said,”Ye are of your father the devil…”(verse44), He was speaking to the Pharisees, the religious leaders, not to pagan devil-worshipers. These men were Satan’s followers because they were ready to kill the Messiah.
Secondly, The Devil and his followers deny the Virgin Birth, Deity of Christ and other fundamental doctrines.
Their implication in John 8:41, is that our Lord was born of fornication; and that He was the illegitimate son of Mary. The Pharisees did not accept the virgin birth.
Jesus Christ claims the expression “I am” corresponds to the passage in the Old Testament, “Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the First, and I am the Last, and beside me, there is no God”(Isaiah 44:6). It is a strong and remarkable declaration that He was in the beginning with God and was with God (John 1:1). Therefore, clearly signifies that He existed and came before Abraham’s day and journey.
Hearing the Lord’s proclamation through Jesus “I speak that which my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father”(verse38). Which is to be understood that He appeared in human form as a Son of God, same nature with Him and equal to Him “I AM THAT I AM…I AM hath sent me unto you” (Exodus 3:14). In His divine nature and fullness, before Abraham became “the father of many nations”, our Lord, Mediator, Savior, and Living Redeemer is from everlasting to everlasting God. Jesus Christ, the same today, yesterday and forever. “Before Abraham was, I am”, assures you and me that there is someone greater than Abraham, the unchangeable I am – Jesus.
We were once foolish, disobedient and slaves to various pleasures, however, God made us alive. Jesus came into this world, died for our sins and rose again. We owe it all to God, the newness of our lives. Not by our deeds but by the work of righteousness in Him alone. Jesus Christ, our Living Hope! “I once was LOST, but now I am FOUND!
