Day 129 Bible Reading
John 2:1-25, KJV
Reflection
In early verses of John 2, we could witness an interesting story about the first miracle of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ in Cana of Galilee where He turned the water into wine.
It is significant that our Lord’s first miracle was at a wedding.
It is a very special wedding event. Now, what makes it exceedingly special? It is not because it’s a lengthy affair (1-week wedding) nor the number of the guests present (although it was not mentioned) but it was simply because JESUS WAS THERE! We could simply say, our Lord put His approval on the sacred institution of marriage.
As we study, there are lots of learning we could acquire here.
Firstly, worshipping Mary is not taught in the Bible.
Our Lord called Mary his mother as Woman (verse4). This is significant because the gospel of John stresses the deity of Christ. Mary is also a sinner like us. Therefore, she needs a Saviour too as she acknowledged it in Luke 1:46-47,”My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.”
Secondly, the wine was not fermented.
Some people assume that every mention of wine in the Bible, refers to fermented wine, while in this text, the “wine” referring here is a “special wine”, an unfermented one, because if this is a fermented wine, it will contradict in the words of God that God is forbidding His children to drink strong drinks. God warns us in Proverbs 20:1, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” So, if the six “waterpots of stone” was filled with fermented wine, then our Lord would be surrounded by winebibbers.
Lastly, salvation is in Christ and Christ Alone!
Interestingly, John never once refers to our Lord’s mother as “Mary”. She is referred to as “Woman”. The purpose of John’s gospel is to exalt Christ, not Mary. “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved”(Acts 4:12).
In Conclusion: God did save the wedding from shame by using a miracle. God is also able to save us too. Not only from shame but to all the problems of this world. In fact, He wanted to rescue our souls from HELL because we are bound to go there but if we have Christ in our hearts, HEAVEN will be our end. GLORY TO GOD
